Editorial principles

Facts, interpretation, and independence

Each article separates what the documentary record establishes, such as dates, materials, provenance, and recorded statements, from the readings that historians and critics propose. When the evidence leaves room for interpretation, we say so plainly rather than presenting one reading as settled.

The magazine is not a museum, foundation, or cultural institution, and it holds no partnerships, collections, or exhibitions that have not been publicly documented. Our writing is meant to be clear and accessible to general readers, without sacrificing accuracy.

Our method

How each article is documented

Consult sources

Each essay begins with primary documents, catalogues, and published scholarship, with the sources listed so readers can check them.

Verify facts

Dates, attributions, materials, and technical details are cross-checked against more than one reference before publication.

Respect rights

Artworks and photographs are reproduced only where rights permit, with credits to the rights holders and no implied ownership or exhibition link.
